Eco-Friendly Wedding Decor Ideas

Discover creative ways to adorn your wedding with eco-friendly decorations. Whether it’s through dried florals, reusable signage, or up-cycled home decor, there’s no reason your wedding can’t marry sustainability and style.

Your wedding day is a canvas upon which you paint your dreams and love story. The colours, textures, and decorations you choose play a significant role in creating the atmosphere and leaving a lasting impression. But what if you could also make your wedding decor kind to the environment? In this blog, we’ll explore ways to make your wedding decorations eco-friendly, adding an extra layer of beauty to your special day.

Creative “Florals”

You do not have to have real cut flowers at your wedding. I’ll say it one more time: “You do not have to have real cut flowers at your wedding”. Think outside of the box and explore other options and ideas. I personally love dried natural flowers and greenery because they are easy to store, can be reused again, do not require water in vases, and look super romantic. Here in British Columbia, I love to support seasonally, local flower farms like Yakashiro Farm that have several dried florals available throughout the year. Here are some examples of dried florals and greenery designed by WasteKnot weddings and events.

Another creative idea is creating paper or wood flower bouquets and/or arrangements- which can either be recycled, reused, or can last forever as a keepsake. If flowers are not your thing, you can also just use a variety of greenery/succulents. Table arrangements can also stray from the traditional florals, like using a bowl or vase full of seasonal fruits or vegetables for a pop of colour that doubles as food for a future meal! You can either take inspiration from nature and incorporate rocks, moss, or live potted plants, or look around your home for personal items that can double as table decor, such as books, souvenirs, family heirlooms, and more. Take a look at the below wooden and paper bouquets and arrangements.

Reusable Signage

Writing on mirrors or chalkboards is an easy way to add charm to your wedding sings that is also earth-friendly and reusable. You can make it extra special by hiring a professional calligrapher to match fonts and styles or even incorporate illustrations on your sign. Take a look at some of these beautiful handwritten chalkboard signs by Flying Jewel Studio.

Dare to Be Different- but Think Ahead

It can be so tempting to follow trends on Pinterest and other socials, but remember your wedding day should be memorable and ever-lasting. By adding personal touches and unique decor, you can create a wedding day that is extra special for both you and those in attendance. Just remember that waste can add up over time, and plan ahead for what will happen to your decor post-wedding day. If you love real flowers, see if someone is getting married with similar colours within one week after your wedding, or donate or compost them to a local community garden or farm. Try to reduce printed materials and resist buying items that are packaged with single-use plastics. Utilize swap and shop Facebook groups, Facebook Marketplace, rental companies, and thrift stores to find items that can recirculate from wedding to wedding, instead of buying brand new.
