Horror film lovers who adore Halloween- what more could you ask for an October wedding? From the most dreamy black-laced wedding dress to the custom coffin-shaped arch with red florals, this wedding was dripping with attention to every spook-tacular detail.
Chris and Nicky tied the (Waste)Knot in October 2025 and it was crafted to tell their story. So how do you bring unique wedding dreams to life while still having a focus on nature and lowering the environmental impact of the wedding? You call in a wedding planner as creative as you are who also happens to love Halloween.
It begins with picking the perfect location and venue for a romantic backdrop. Nestled in Yaletown in Vancouver, Brix and Mortar‘s wedding courtyard and private dining area provided a great location for both the ceremony and reception, simplifying one location for all events. The courtyard is weather-proof all year round with a glass ceiling, allowing natural light even on a cloudy day, and has gorgeous greenery climbing the walls, a dramatic crystal chandelier, and black accents including chairs, lanterns, linens, and even a black ceremony aisle runner. Choosing a great restaurant venue also simplifies the food and beverage logistics with delicious menu selections and great drinks. The Opus Vancouver Hotel is just steps away from the venue, providing great accommodations and getting ready location and a spot for the post-wedding brunch the next day. The location also made it relatively easy to capture First Look and Wedding Party photos in Stanley Park, surrounded by nature as a fantastic compliment to the black and red colours.
To achieve the specific vision at the venue, Nicky and Chris got creative by collecting skeleton figurines overtime to add to the tabletop decor and even spray-painted vampire teeth silver to use a place card holders for each place setting. They also created their own coffin-shaped dinner menus, Welcome Sign held by a Skeleton, and bar menu signs to add to the vintage-gothic vibe, plus a neon “Til Death”. Bespoke Decor has a wide variety of beautiful rentals to choose from to help compliment their vision. After a consultation, they selected dark red velvet table runners, black faux-tapered candles with silver candlesticks, LED pillar candles, and vintage water goblets to compliment the look.
To truly complete the ‘Til Death celebration, they envisioned saying their “I Dos” standing under a coffin-shaped arch– so of course we made that happen! Mallory did some research and got in touch with Luke, owner of Good Old Wood Co., who creates beautiful custom wood pieces and structures from reclaimed and salvaged wood. Stained to a dark brown with gold accent finish, the gorgeous piece was complimented by special asymmetrical floral arrangements from Blossom & Vine Floral Co., matching the dreamy bouquet and boutonniére with red rose touches on the tables.
The dramatic black velvet curtains revealed Nicky and her dad, complete with a fog machine for extra drama! After the ceremony, guests enjoyed a 3-course meal inside the cozy restaurant. Dancing was a big priority as well for Nicky and Chris, so of course Mallory taught them a special first dance immediately followed by a flash-mob with the wedding party of “The Time Warp” from Rocky Horror Picture Show! This really kicked off the evening, and DJ Barron S, the best DJ in Vancouver (in our opinion), truly kept the party going all night long with awesome songs and fun lighting! She brings props, like bubble machines and LED fans, to keep guests entertained above and beyond expectations. Oh I shouldn’t forget the Dungeon and Dragons themed bar experience and guest favours- a custom D&D dice roller to roll for a special themed cocktail, and customized D&D dice to take home.
This wedding was truly one of a kind. Take a look at some of the stunning photos from Nicky and Chris’s awesome day, captured by the extremely talented Dani Luise Photography.
